The value of identity
I’ve been thinking alot about ‘identity’ of late. I read a quote that said “the value of identity is that is so often comes with purpose”
Well this is indeed true and then not at all. You see identity, gone right, comes with purpose. Consciously having an understanding of who we are, what we stand for and our strong and weak characteristics allows us to make choices more in line with the essence of who we are. This creates purpose and contentment for one of the biggest differentiating factors in humanity from animals or plants is our need for meaning.
Identity gone wrong, in other words, when the ego takes over is when we begin to define ourselves by a particular scenario or person. For instance workaholics overly identify with work and when not able to work are unable to find meaning in their lives and worse, value in themselves. This too can be true for people who over identify within a relationship with a particular person, for people who over-identify with their bodies or sport and can be translated to any scenario.
The key to a meaningful life and true contentedness lies in the ability to have a strong sense of identity but not to identify with any a particular scenario or person.
Have a beautiful day!
